Aaron Johnson was named the MIVA Sports Information Director in August 2019. In his role with the MIVA, he oversees the conference website, selects Player of the Week award winners and coordinates information with coaches and sports information directors from each member institution.
He also serves as the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Services at MIVA member insitution Purdue Fort Wayne. He was the SID contact for the Mastodons' men's volleyball team for three seasons, of which the Mastodons spent the majority in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll. He is now the SID for the women's volleyball, women's basketball, softball, women's golf and men's golf programs.
Johnson came to Purdue Fort Wayne in 2016 as a graduate assistant in the athletic media services office. He received his master's degree in professional communication in 2018 with a 4.0 in the program. He was promoted to be the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Services in July, 2019. When he was a graduate assistant, he was the contact for women's soccer and the AVCA Top 15 men's volleyball program. While at Purdue Fort Wayne, Johnson has had various notable experiences, including serving as the talent statistics coordinator for the Big Ten Network in Purdue Fort Wayne's 71-68 men's basketball overtime victory over Indiana in 2016. He assisted in two rebranding efforts and an overhaul in soccer, baseball and softball streaming, upgrading from a single camera to a multi-camera setup. He was also responsible for the recreation and updates of the women's soccer record book and men's volleyball match notes.
During his time with the men's volleyball team, the Mastodons earned an AVCA Top-15 ranking in 2018, and beat No. 3 UC Irvine on the Anteaters' home floor. He coordinated with national and local media in the aftermath of that contest for interviews with student-athletes. The 2018 men's volleyball team started the season 8-0, which was a program-best.
Johnson graduated from Indiana University in 2016 with a degree in Sport Communication. In his time there, he was a broadcaster for the Big Ten Network Student U program from 2014-16. Highlights of his broadcasting career included the 2015 edition of Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball at Indiana, and the NCAA men's soccer tournament second round matchup of Indiana vs. Connecticut in 2014. He also joined the Indiana baseball team as a broadcaster on iuhoosiers.com, traveling with the Hoosiers for several road contests and home events. He was also the sports editor for the Indiana Arbutus Yearbook in 2015-16 and a contributing writer for several media outlets in Bloomington, Indiana. Additionally, he was a contributing writer and photographer to his home county's newspaper (The Paper of Wabash County, Inc.) in 2014.
During the summers from 2015-2019, Johnson worked as a cabin counselor for the Woodcraft Camp as a part of the Culver Summer Schools and Camps in Culver, Indiana. He taught children ages 9-14 in a variety of class subjects, including newspaper design, golf, ping-pong, softball, and military leadership. He also served as a content creator for the Woodcraft Camp's social media platforms and website. In the summer of 2021, he was promoted to Athletic Director.
Johnson resides in Fort Wayne, Indiana with his wife, Meredith.
