FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association commissioner Tim O'Brien announced on Tuesday (Sept. 3) that Aaron Johnson will take over the duties of Sports Information Director for the 2020 season.
"We are pleased to welcome Aaron as our new sports information director," MIVA commissioner Tim O'Brien said. "Aaron's passion for men's volleyball combined with his professional background made him stand out in the search process. He has already hit the ground running and we are lucky to have him aboard."
Johnson will take the place of Derrick Sloboda, who was the SID for the last five years.
"I'd like to thank Derrick for his great work over the past five seasons," O'Brien said. "He's been a great asset for us during his tenure with the MIVA."
Johnson is no stranger to the MIVA, having served as the graduate assistant for media services at Purdue Fort Wayne. He received his master's degree in professional communication in 2018 with a 4.0 in the program. He was the SID contact for the Mastodons' men's volleyball team for three years before moving into a full-time role at Purdue Fort Wayne. In August 2019, Johnson was promoted to be the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Services. He serves as the SID contact for women's volleyball, women's basketball, softball, and men's and women's golf.
"I am incredibly excited to continue serving the men's volleyball community by joining the MIVA," Johnson said. "The MIVA has already been a great conference for me while working as Purdue Fort Wayne's SID contact, and I'm sure it will continue to be a wonderful spot for me moving forward. I hope I can do my best to serve the MIVA as best I can."
During Johnson's time with the men's volleyball team at Purdue Fort Wayne, the Mastodons earned an AVCA Top-15 ranking in 2018 and 2019, and beat No. 3 UC Irvine on the Anteaters' home floor in 2018. In his second season, the 'Dons started the season 8-0, which was a program-best. The 2019 Mastodons earned a semifinal berth in the MIVA Tournament with a 3-0 win over Lindenwood.
Prior to Purdue Fort Wayne, Johnson graduated from Indiana University in 2016 with a degree in sport communication. In his time there, he was a broadcaster for the Big Ten Network Student U program from 2014-16. He also joined the Indiana baseball team as a broadcaster on iuhoosiers.com, traveling with the Hoosiers for several road contests and home events. He was also the sports editor for the Indiana Arbutus Yearbook in 2015-16 and a contributing writer for several media outlets in Bloomington, Indiana.
