MIVA Announces 2023 All-MIVA Awards

The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association has announced its All-MIVA Teams, Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.

Ohio State's Jacob Pasteur was selected as the MIVA Player of the Year. He is the first Ohio State Player to be named Player of the Year since Nicolas Szerszen in 2018. Pasteur led Ohio State to a share of the MIVA regular season title by averaging 3.79 kills per set, 4.13 in MIVA play. He was one of the MIVA's most efficient attackers, averaging a .327 hitting percentage during the conference season. Pasteur is the 24th Player of the Year from Ohio State in MIVA history.

The MIVA Coach of the Year is John Hawks, head coach for Loyola Chicago. In his first year in the Windy City, Hawks led the Ramblers to a share of the MIVA regular season title with an 11-3 MIVA record. He led the Ramblers to as high a ranking as No. 9 in the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll. Hawks is the second coach in a row to be named Coach of the Year after winning a regular season title in their first year, joining Ball State's Donan Cruz, who earned the honor a year ago. This is the seventh time a Loyola Chicago coach was named Coach of the Year.

Ohio State's Shane Wetzel was picked as the Newcomer of the Year for 2023. Wetzel averaged 2.46 kills per set with a .317 hitting percentage for the Buckeyes from the opposite position. In MIVA matches, he was even better 2.95 kills per set and a .333 hitting percentage. Wetzel is the second Ohio State player to be named Newcomer of the Year in the last three years, and seventh overall since the award was first issued in 1998.

All eight MIVA teams were represented on either the first or second All-MIVA teams. Loyola Chicago had a league-best five honorees on the All-MIVA teams, followed by Ball State (4), Lindenwood (4), Ohio State (3), Lewis (2), Purdue Fort Wayne (2), McKendree (2) and Quincy (1).
