Lewis Claims MIVA Tournament Championship With 3-0 Win Over Loyola Chicago

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University Flyers won the MIVA Tournament on Saturday (April 24) by sweeping Loyola Chicago 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-19) in Neil Carey Arena.

Lewis dominated from the opening serve and never trailed in the match. The Flyers went up 20-10 in the first set after an 8-2 run. Lewis was unstoppable on the offensive side, hitting .500 in the opening set.

Loyola slowed down Lewis to its lowest hitting percentage in the second set, which dropped down to .276. The Flyers' defense held Loyola under .100 hitting in the first and second sets. Their lead ballooned to as large as six at 22-16 before Loyola bit into the lead with three straight.

The third set was more of the same as Lewis broke through to an early lead (9-5) and held it the rest of the way. The Ramblers brought it within three multiple times but got no closer.

For the match, Lewis hit .364 while holding the Ramblers to .115. Tournament MVP Ryan Coenen had 10 kills on 23 swings while Kyle Bugee had 10 on 21. TJ Murray hammered down nine kills on 12 error-less attacks. Kevin Kauling had 32 assists. Carlos Jimenez led the Flyers with seven digs. Coenen and Murray had five blocks each.

Loyola got nine kills out of All-Tournament Team member Cole Schlothauer.

Lewis will find out their opponent in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, April 25.
