HONOLULU, Hawai'I – The Ball State men's volleyball team struggled in the opening set against No. 6 Pepperdine and never quite recovered in a 3-0 loss to the Waves at the Outrigger Resorts Invitational hosted by Hawai'i. The loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the Cardinals.

Pepperdine (12-4) scored the first six points of the match and cruised the rest of the opening set in a 25-13 win. The Waves hit a match-high .492 in set one.

Ball State (9-9), which was facing its sixth top-10 opponent, regrouped in set two. There were seven ties early in the set, and Pepperdine never led by more than three points. Back-to-back kills from Kaleb Jenness allowed the Cardinals to fight off two set points and close the deficit to one point, 24-23. Unfortunately, Pepperdine's Michael Wexter put the set away with one of his team-high 12 kills.

Pepperdine completed the sweep by taking eight of the first 11 points in the third set. The Waves stretched their lead to as many as eight and held off a late Ball State charge.

Ben Chinnici posted a season-high 13 kills and finished with a .345 attack percentage to pace Ball State. His previous high was 12 putaways in a win over No. 13 George Mason.

This is Ball State's sixth appearance at the Outrigger Invitational. The Cardinals will take on host and undefeated No. #2 Hawai'I Friday night at midnight ET.
