Only five points separate the top three selections in the 2019 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Preseason Poll, released Thursday (Dec. 13).
The Lewis Flyers were picked to finish first in a vote of the league coaches with 58 total points and four first place votes. Loyola was picked next, earning 54 points and one first place vote. Ohio State was right behind in third place with 53 points and two first place votes. Ball State was the fourth team to earn a first place vote. They took fourth with 38 points. Just behind the Cardinals were the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons with 36 points. Lindenwood (23), McKendree (18) and Quincy (8) followed.
Loyola senior outside hitter Collin Mahan was named the 2019 MIVA Preseason Player of the Year. He was joined by his teammate sophomore setter Garrett Zolg on the MIVA All-Preseason Team. Three Buckeyes are named to the team with Jake Hanes, Blake Leeson and Sanil Thomas picking up nods. Lindenwood's Connor Hipelius and Purdue Fort Wayne's Pelegrin Vargas round out the squad.
