ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Veteran college athletics administrator Craig Barnett has been named commissioner of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA).
"The MIVA has long been one of the best men's volleyball leagues in the nation, and I'm excited about building upon the MIVA's legacy of success on and off the court,” Barnett said. “All nine MIVA programs share the common goal of providing a first-class student-athlete experience. That commitment is essential to the growth of the league and men’s volleyball.”
The MIVA isn't Barnett's first experience as a league commissioner. In 2011, Barnett was named commissioner of the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC), a league that won seven of the past nine NCAA I Championships. League members included four Big Ten and two SEC schools as well as lacrosse power Johns Hopkins University. The ALC was dissolved this past summer due to the Big Ten adding lacrosse as a conference sport.
In addition to his commissioner role of MIVA, Barnett is in his third season as Director of Player Personnel for the North American Hockey League. Barnett oversees league-wide scouting efforts in the NAHL, NA3HL and NAPHL, including directing the Event Scouting System as well as presenting NCAA Compliance and Education seminars to all teams and families.
Barnett previously served as the athletic director at NCAA Division II Mercyhurst (2006-09) and NCAA Division III Becker College (2004-06). He was head hockey coach at the University of Findlay (1995-02), where he guided the program from club to NCAA Division I level.
Barnett's lengthy experience in NCAA ice hockey makes him uniquely qualified for the MIVA post. Hockey, like men's volleyball, features NCAA Division I and II programs playing for the same national championship.
A native of Oakville, Ontario, Barnett is a former professional hockey player with 20 years of coaching and administration experience at the NCAA I, II, and III level. He played college hockey at Plattsburgh (NY) State University, where he was a member of the 1987 NCAA Championship team. He was also named to their all-decade team (1985-1994) and was the university's Student-Athlete of the Year in 1989. Barnett currently resides in Erie, Pa. with his wife Andrea, and their three children Olivia, Braeden and Jace.
Founded in 1961, the MIVA is the midwest's premier collegiate men's volleyball league. Charter members Ball State and Ohio State are joined by Quincy, Grand Canyon, IPFW, Lewis, Loyola-Chicago, Lindenwood and McKendree. Loyola-Chicago won the 2014 NCAA National Championship.
