Petty Records School Record Seven Aces In Win At Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – Junior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill. /Downers Grove North) recorded a school record seven aces as No. 9 Lewis men’s volleyball swept a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match at Quincy 25-13, 25-17, 25-12 on Tuesday (April 3) evening.

Four of Petty’s aces came in an 11-0 run that Lewis used to close out the third set. His record breaking seventh ace gave Lewis point 24. His first three aces all came in the second set.

“Jay mixed up his serves, going short and deep,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “It’s a great accomplishment.”

Five times in program history a Flyer has recorded six aces in a match, the last being Enrique Escalante against Mercyhurst on Feb. 19, 2005.

Petty was equally dangerous near the net, recording 15 kills on 21 attempts with one error for a .667 hitting percentage. Petty was a big reason Lewis out-hit Quincy .500 to .098. Freshman Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill. /Downers Grove North) hit .438 with nine kills. Freshman Eric Butch (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) recorded 32 assists.

“The guys came to play and Eric did a fantastic job of running the offense,” Friend said. “Lots of guys were superb tonight and we had a great offensive flow.”

Quincy falls to 17-12 (1-10 MIVA). Lewis improves to 20-6 (6-3 MIVA). The win matches last year’s win total of 20.

Tuesday’s contest was the final regular season road match of the season for Lewis. The Flyers host Ball State on Friday in a key MIVA contest. The match will be aired live on Lakeshore Public Television at 7 p.m.
