No. 10 Ohio State Sweeps No. 6 Lewis
COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 6 Lewis men’s
volleyball dropped a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball
Association match at No. 10 Ohio State 25-19, 25-18, 25-22 on
Saturday (March 31) evening at St. John Arena.
Ohio State pulled away in the opening set thanks to an 8-0 run
that turned a one-point Lewis lead into a 19-12 Ohio State
advantage. It was a similar tune in the second set. The Flyers led
10-9 when Ohio State went on a 6-0 run which was part of a larger
10-2 push.
Lewis appeared to be on their way to a set three victory after
taking a 19-17 lead following three consecutive Ohio State hitting
errors. From that point on, however, Ohio State outscored the
Flyers 8-3.
Senior middle hitter Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville,
Ohio/St. Edward) led Lewis with eight kills on 13 attempts and just
one error for a .538 hitting percentage. He also added five block
assists. Junior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers
Grove North) led Lewis with 10 digs. Freshman Geoff
Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) hit .375 with seven
kills.
Shawn Sangrey had a match-high 17 kills for the Buckeyes.
“We’re not playing really good volleyball right
now,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said.
“We’re in a bad spot currently and we’ll have to
work out of it.”
Ohio State improves to 16-8 (6-3 MIVA). Lewis falls to 19-6 (5-3
MIVA).
The Flyers are next in action on Tuesday with a road MIVA match at
Quincy. First serve against the Hawks is set for 7 p.m.
