LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 7 Lewis men’s volleyball dropped a 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9) decision to Cal Baptist on Friday (March 9) evening in the Active Ankle Classic hosted by Long Beach State. The loss snaps Lewis’ eight match win streak.
The match was an offensive bonanza with both teams hitting over .300 and recording a combined 131 kills. Lewis was led offensively by junior Jay Petty’s (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) 18 kills. He was one of four Flyers with double-digit tallies. Senior Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) hit .632 with 13 kills. Fellow senior middle hitter Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) added 11 kills. Junior Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) recorded 12 kills.
They were all topped by Cal Baptist’s Aaron McCalmont, who finished with 22 kills.
The Flyers never trailed in the opening set and took that momentum into the next set as Lewis led 21-19 in the second. However that’s when things got away from the Flyers. The Lancers scored the next four points and grabbed a 23-21 lead. It was enough of a push to help the Lancers win the set. The Flyers bounced back to win the third set 25-19. It was done thanks to five separate runs of two or more points down the stretch. A 25-21 victory in the fourth set by the Lancers pushed it to five. Cal Baptist pulled away in the final frame with a four-point run after leading just 9-8.
The win is Cal Baptist’s second over a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association team in as many matches. The Lancers defeated Loyola-Chicago in five sets on Wednesday.
Cal Baptist is now 9-13. Lewis falls to 14-4.
“Tonight wasn’t the performance I was expecting,” Lewis head coach Dan Friend said. “We have a chance to turn it around quickly with tomorrow’s match.”
The Flyers play tournament host No. 8 Long Beach State on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT.
