The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team defeated the Quincy University Hawks 3-0 in their first Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match of the season in Grand Canyon University Arena in Phoenix, Ariz.
This match improves the Antelopes to 10-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Hawks are now 12-3, 0-2.
“Any time you hit over .300 and side-out well over 70 percent, you’ve got to feel good about where your offense is,” said head coach Jeremy Price.
The ‘Lopes were down nearly the entire first set before a service ace by Ben Ponnet would tie the game at 13-13. They would hold the lead for the remainder of the game. Ponnet had eight kills alone in the set to lead the team to a 25-21 set victory.
GCU came out strong in the second set, beating the Hawks 25-14. It was an even playing field with the ‘Lopes ahead just four points before an attack error by Quincy would send GCU on a 9-2 run to close out the set. With an 85 side-out percentage, Grand Canyon was able to keep Quincy out of their offense and holding them to a .031 attack percentage.
The Hawks would battle back in the third set but GCU would come out victorious, winning the set 25-21 and taking the match 3-0.
Ponnet led the offense with a .485 attack percentage and 19 kills in just three sets. He also added the ‘Lopes lone service ace of the match.
“He was outstanding tonight. Any time you have 19 kills in a three-set match and hit almost .500, it says a lot. He’s playing really well.”
“Tonight we played well, but tomorrow is going to be a new day. We have to expect that they’re going to play better the second day and we’re going to have to play even better than we did tonight.”
Grand Canyon will face Quincy
again tomorrow at 4 p.m. in GCU Arena.
