Columbus, Ohio –Ohio State men’s volleyball Shawn Sangrey and Steven Kehoe have been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Offensive and Defensive players of the week, respectively. Sangrey averaged 4.94 points, 4.25 kills (.264), 1.12 digs and .88 blocks per set in helping eighth-ranked Ohio State win their fourth consecutive MIVA Tournament Championship. He posted a match-high 22.5 points in the 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-18) semifinal win over No. 13 Lewis. Sangrey recorded a match-high 18 kills (.250) against the Flyers adding seven assist blocks, three digs and one ace serve in the match. In the 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17) win over Loyola-Chicago in the championship match, he recorded 16 kills (.281), six digs and one ace serve against the Ramblers. This is his fifth player of the week award this season.
OSU hit .384 for the two matches while Kehoe averaged 11.88 assists per set. He had 48 assists against Lewis adding two kills, one ace serve, five digs and two assist blocks. OSU was out hit in the first set loss, .321 to .241 but responded in the final three sets to hit .410 to .082 for the Flyers. In the championship match against Loyola-Chicago, he recorded 47 assists adding three kills, eight digs and a season-high and career-tying six assist blocks. Again, OSU was out hit .429 to .267 in the first set loss but responded to win the final three sets hitting .431 to .149 for the Ramblers. This is his third player of the week award this season.
The Buckeyes advance to the NCAA Championship semifinals, May 5 in Rec Hall on the Penn State campus. Ohio State, the No. 3 seed, will face host and No. 2 seed Penn State (24-6) at 9 p.m. in the second semifinal. No. 1 seed Southern California (23-3) faces No. 4 seed UC Santa Barbara (17-14) in the 7 p.m. semifinal. The semifinal winners play at 7 p.m. Saturday for the national championship. All three matches will be carried live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com.
