Top-seeded OSU defeats fourth-seeded Lewis, 3-1, Faces Second-seeded Loyola-Chicago Saturday for the MIVA Tournament Championship
Columbus, Ohio – The ninth-ranked and top-seeded Ohio State (23-6 overall) men’s volleyball team overcame a first set loss to defeat 13th-ranked and four-seeded Lewis (20-11), 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-18) in one semifinal match of the MIVA Tournament. OSU was outhit .321 to .241 in the first set loss but hit .410 to .082 in the final three sets to secure the victory. The win advances the Buckeyes to the MIVA Tournament championship at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena. OSU will host 12th-ranked and second seeded Loyola-Chicago (21-7), a 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19) winner over sixth-seeded Quincy (22-14) in a semifinal match played at Loyola-Chicago.
OSU’s Shawn Sangrey posted a match-high 22.5 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 18 kills (.250), one ace serve and seven assist blocks. John Klanac added 14.5 points with 11 kills (.389), two ace serves, one solo and one assist block. Flyer Brian Muesenfechter recorded a team-high 14 points for Lewis with 13 kills (.250) and two assist blocks. Jay Petty added 10 points with nine kills (-.031) and two assist blocks.
With set one tied at eight, a Mike Adams kill and an Aaron Flick-Muesenfechter block gave Lewis a 10-8 lead. A Kevin Heine kill cut the margin to one at 10-9. An OSU error and an ace serve from Adams gave the Flyers a 12-9 lead. Sangrey, with a kill, made it 12-10. A kill from Muesenfechter and a Sangrey-Grayson Overman block moved the score to 13-11. A kill from Petty, an OSU error and a Petty-Matt Gallik-BJ Boldog block opened a five point Flyer lead at 16-11. Lewis held the lead reaching set point with a kill from Petty at 24-19. An Overman kill stopped the set point at 24-20. An OSU error ended the set at 25-20 to give Lewis a 1-0 lead in the match. The Flyers hit .321 for the set to .241 for Ohio State.
Lewis held a 3-2 lead in set two when a Heine kill tied the set. A Sangrey kill and a Heine-Sangrey block gave OSU a 5-3 lead. At 6-4, a Jason Tobkin ace serve and a Flyer error gave Ohio State an 8-4 lead. OSU held a 13-9 lead when a Flyer error and a Tobkin solo block made the lead six at 15-9. At 16-10, an ace serve from Steven Kehoe and a Flyer error made it 18-10. Two OSU errors and a Boldog block made it 18-13. At 20-15, a kill from Klanac made the lead six at 21-15. Two OSU errors and a kill from Adams made it 21-18 Buckeyes. Kills from Klanac and Sangrey made it 23-18. A Flyer error gave OSU set point at 24-18. A Buckeye error stopped the set point at 24-19. OSU won the set, 25-19, with a Sangrey kill to tie the match at one. The Buckeyes hit .269 for the set to -.037 for Lewis.
Tied at one in the third set, a Flyer error and a kill from Sangrey gave Ohio State a 3-1 lead. At 8-5, kills from Sangrey and Klanac and a Tobkin ace serve gave the Buckeyes an 11-5 lead. Leading, 13-7, two errors from Lewis and a kill from Kehoe made the lead, 16-7. Lewis trailed, 19-9, when a five-point run cut the lead to five at 19-14. Kills from Muesenfechter, Gallik and Ian Karbiener and two Buckeyes errors complete the run. A Sangrey kill, a Sangrey-Heine block, a Sangrey-Heine-Tobkin block and a Flyer error stopped the run at 23-14. A Muesenfechter kill and a Roberto Davis-Karbiener block cut the lead to 23-16. OSU reached set point at 24-16 with a kill from Heine. A Flyer error ended the set at 25-16, to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .522 for the set to .120 for Lewis.
In the fourth set, Lewis held a 3-2 lead when a Sangrey kill tied the set at three. Five consecutive points for OSU gave the Buckeyes an 8-3 lead. The run contained two Flyer errors, a Kehoe-Overman block, an ace serve from Sangrey and a kill from Klanac. Leading, 15-10, a kill from Klanac and an Overman-Sangrey block made it 17-10. A Buckeye error and a kill from Adams made it 17-12. Two kills from Klanac made the lead seven at 19-12. OSU held the lead at 23-16 when kills from Petty and Muesenfechter cut the margin to five at 23-18. A Flyer error gave Ohio State match point at 24-18. Ohio State won the set, 25-18 with a solo block from Klanac to win the match, 3-1. The Buckeyes hit .448 for the set to .152 for Lewis.
For the match, Ohio State hit .364 to .142 for Lewis. The Buckeyes had a 53-42 advantage in kills and a 51-41 margin in assists. OSU’s Kehoe recorded a match-high 48 with Boldog collecting 39 for Lewis. The Buckeyes had a six-two edge in ace serves with Klanac and Tobkin sharing match-high honors with two each. OSU gave up 18 service errors to eight for Lewis. Defensively, OSU had a 34-32 edge in digs. OSU’s Klanac and Davis of Lewis shared match-high honors with nine each. At the net, Ohio State had a 12 to 6.5 advantage in team blocks. OSU’s Sangrey was the match leader in blocks with seven assists.
