The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team dropped tonight’s match 0-3 to the Lewis University Flyers at Antelope Gymnasium.
The ‘Lopes fall to a 0-11 record in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and Lewis advances to 6-5.
Lewis came out strong in the first set defeating the ‘Lopes 25-17. The Flyers hit .500 as a team compared to GCU’s .091 average. GCU was able to tie the score six times but couldn’t pull ahead.
The ‘Lopes battled back in the next two sets, losing both 25-22. Junior Taylor Griffin (Tucson, AZ , Ironwood Ridge) was subbed in during the second set and made a definite impact. In two sets Griffin had six kills, five in the third set alone, and no errors, hitting .462 for the night.
Freshman setter Keith Smith (Whittier, CA, California High School) had 21 assists, a team high five digs, and two kills. Freshman outside hitter Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) was the only ‘Lope to reach double-digit kills with 10. He also contributed three digs and two blocks.
The ‘Lopes will take on the Lewis University Flyers again tomorrow night at 6:00 pm in Antelope Gymnasium.
