Freshman outside hitter Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) was named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Defensive Player of the Week today by the MIVA media office.
Grand Canyon went 0-2 this weekend but it didn’t stop Ponnet from having an outstanding weekend. During Friday’s 2-3 loss to Quincy University, he slated 10 digs, two solo blocks, and one block assist. On serve receive he had 30 attempts and no errors. In Saturday’s 0-3 loss, he had four digs, four block assists, and 23 serve receive attempts without a single error. He has 51 total blocks this season and 159 digs.
In addition to his defensive performance, Ponnet’s 25 kills this weekend put him at the 300 mark, passing Grand Canyon’s season record of 288.
This is Grand Canyon’s first player of the week award this season. The ‘Lopes will host Lewis University this weekend for its final regular season matches. Match time is set for 6:00 pm on April 15 and 16.
