Grand Canyon Drops Match to Quincy; Ponnet Sets New Record

The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team dropped their second match against the Quincy University Hawks, 0-3, tonight in Quincy, Ill. but freshman Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) set a new record for kills in a single season with 300.

Grand Canyon lost a close match last night 2-3 and tonight Quincy stepped on the court with confidence. The Hawks swept the ‘Lopes 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-21) by out hitting, digging, and serving the entire match. Quincy ended the night with 39 kills, four service aces, 31 digs, and 10.5 blocks. GCU had 29 kills, 22 digs, and 10 blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Ponnet dominated the weekend with 15 kills last night and 10 tonight. He now has 300 kills this season, a new high for Grand Canyon. The previous record was 288, set by Taylor Griffin in 2009 and tied by Chris Lockwood in 2010. Ponnet also contributed four digs and four blocks.

GCU falls to 0-10 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and 8-21 overall. The ‘Lopes will host their final matches of the regular season next weekend, April 15 and 16, against Lewis University at 6:00 p.m. both nights.
