Grand Canyon falls, 3-2, at Quincy
The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team dropped a close five-set match to Quincy University tonight in Quincy, Ill.
The ‘Lopes came out strong in the first, beating the Hawks 25-22. GCU started with the lead and held it the entire set, allowing Quincy to tie the score only twice before pulling ahead. Junior Jake Wekell (Tempe, AZ/Marcos de Niza) dominated with four kills and no errors to lead the offense and Taylor Galliano (Norco, CA/Foothill , Irvine Valley College) contributed two blocks.
Quincy would win the next two sets 25-22 and 25-23. The third set was a close battle as the score tied seven times and GCU came from behind to tie the score at 23-23. Two kills by Quincy would end the set, giving the Hawks a 2-1 advantage. Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium/OLVC) had an impressive six kills and just one error but it wasn’t enough to come out with a win.
Grand Canyon tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Quincy battled early on in the set before GCU went on a five point streak to secure the lead. Galliano contributed six kills on six attempts and no errors.
The Hawks started with the lead in the fifth set and would hold onto it, beating the ‘Lopes 15-11. Grand Canyon tied the score seven times but was unable to pull ahead, dropping the match 2-3. This is the first conference win for Quincy University and GCU falls to 0-9 in the MIVA.
Ponnet and Wekell ended the night with a double-double. Ponnet had 15 kills and 10 digs while Wekell contributes 13 kills and 12 digs. Galliano hit .400 for the night with 12 kills and led the defense with five total blocks. Freshman setter Keith Smith (Whittier, CA/California High School) had 44 assists.
The ‘Lopes will take on the Hawks again tomorrow night in Quincy, Ill. at 7:00 pm EST.
