The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team dropped a close match to the Ball State Cardinals tonight 2-3 in Muncie, Ind.
The ‘Lopes dropped their match 1-3 last night but came back today ready to battle. GCU had a slow start, losing the first set 12-25. However, they came back to win the next two, 25-18 and 25-21. Ball State took the fourth set 25-23 to tie the match at two sets apiece. The fifth set was a close one with the Cardinals leading the entire set but GCU tying the score nine times. Ultimately it would be Ball State who would grab the win with a 15-13 fifth set victory to take the match.
GCU’s Jake Wekell (Tempe, AZ, Marcos de Niza) had an outstanding night with a match high 24 kills, two service aces, nine digs, and three total blocks.
“Jake was unbelievable,” said head coach Jeremy Price. “I’m proud of the effort we gave and we’re getting closer to winning those tough sets. I see the progression in practice is beginning to show on the court.”
Also recording high numbers, was sophomore setter Brad Moore (Orange, CA, Orange Lutheran) who subbed in to finish the match and slated 47 assists. Libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) had 13 digs and 22 receptions without a single error. Freshman Ben Hunt (Huntington Beach, CA , Servite) finished the night with seven kills, eight digs, and 34 errorless serve receptions.
The ‘Lopes fall to 0-8 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and 8-19 overall. The team will play Quincy University next week, April 8 and 9.
