Grand Canyon falls 1-3 to IPFW
The 'Lopes came out ready to battle after being swept by IPFW on
Thursday, March 10. GCU was able to grab a game off the Mastodons
but it wasn’t enough to grab a win. IPFW won the first set in
a close 25-21 contest and the second 25-19. The ‘Lopes
battled to win the third set 25-22.
The fourth set was an exciting set as there were four lead changes
and 13 tie scores. Freshman Ben Ponnet
(Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) had seven kills alone in the
fourth. However, IPFW came out with a 29-27 win to take the
match.
Grand Canyon had three players with double-digit kills. Ponnet had
15 kills and three blocks for the night. Ben Hunt
(Huntington Beach, CA , Servite) contributed 12 kills
and Jordon Tarantino
(Valley Center, CA , Valley Center , Palomar Community
College) had 13. Tarantino hit an impressive .550 for the
contest.
Sophomore libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) racked up 12 digs.
Jake Wekell (Tempe, AZ, Marcos de Niza) had three blocks and two service aces. Freshman setter Keith Smith (Whittier, CA, California High School) had 53 assists.
The loss drops GCU to a 0-4 record in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and 8-15 overall.
The ‘Lopes will host fourth ranked Ohio State on March 20 at 4:00 pm in Antelope Gym.
