Grand Canyon Defeats NYU, Tarantino Sets New Record
The ‘Lopes had a tough battle ahead of them going into tonight’s match and they knew they had to be prepared to play.
GCU was down 0-1 after the first set and had to battle their way to win the second 25-21. NYU went on to win the third set 25-21 and the ‘Lopes took the fourth 25-21. With the match tied up at 2-2, it was anyone’s game. The ‘Lopes led the way in the fifth set and took the match with a 15-11 victory.
Sophomore Tarantino had an impressive night setting a new record for kills in a single match with 25 in tonight’s contest. “Jordon played extremely well…no one could stop him,” said head coach Jeremy Price.
Also recording some high numbers were Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) with 13 kills and Ben Hunt (Huntington Beach, CA , Servite) with 11. Junior middle Taylor Galliano (Norco, CA , Foothill , Irvine Valley College) hit .556 for the night with six kills on nine attempts. Sophomore libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) had 21 digs, 214 for the season.
Freshman setter Keith Smith (Whittier, CA, California High School) was back in the lineup and slated 52 assists, seven digs, and one block assist. “Keith did a great job running the offense and it showed how effective we were with a sideout percentage of 71,” said Price.
Tonight’s match is GCU’s third straight win and they’re looking to keep the run going. The ‘Lopes have a week off before hosting Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne on March 10 at 6:00 pm.
