MUNCIE, Ind. - - Ball State men's volleyball senior middle attacker Anders Nelson (St. Croix Falls, Wis./St. Croix Falls H.S.) has been named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday evening.
This is the first MIVA offensive honor for the Cardinals this season, and the first of Nelson's career. Earlier this season, freshman libero Tommy Rouse (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral H.S.) was named the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week.
Nelson helped guide the Cardinals to a 1-1 record last week by leading the team with 19 kills, 17 total blocks and a .593 (19-3-27) attack percentage.
In BSU's five-set loss at No. 14 Lewis last Friday, Nelson paced the Cardinals with 18 points, racking up 13 kills, three solo blocks and four block assists, while hitting for a .526 (13-3-19) rate of success. He also collected a season-best five digs in the contest.
In Saturday's sweep of IPFW, Nelson rack up 11 points with six kills and a career-high 10 block assists, while hitting for a .750 (6-0-8) mark.
Nelson enters the week as the league leader in blocks (1.46) and ranked fifth in hitting percentage (.460).
The Ball State men's volleyball team returns to action Friday, when it hosts league-leading No. 6 Ohio State for a 7:30 p.m. first serve at Worthen Arena. BSU returns home Saturday for another 7:30 p.m. first serve versus No. 13 Loyola.
