GCU Falls to Loyola 0-3

The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team fell to Loyola University 0-3 in tonight’s contest.

GCU is now 0-2 in the MIVA and 5-12 overall this season. Loyola is now 3-0 in conference and 8-3 overall.

The ‘Lopes competed tonight but were unable to take a set off the Loyola Ramblers. All three sets had close scores, 23-25, 20-25, and 20-25. The first two sets the lead was held by the Ramblers the whole way with Grand Canyon bringing the score to a tie seven and eight times respectively. The ‘Lopes hit a solid .296 and .318 in sets one and two but it wasn’t enough to top the Ramblers’ .324 and .591 percentages. The third and final set rallied between the two teams with three lead changes and eight ties scores before Loyola finished with a win.

Junior middle blocker Taylor Galliano (Norco, CA , Foothill , Irvine Valley College) had a great night with 13 kills and just one error giving him a .571 hitting percentage. Galliano also contributed three block assists. Freshman Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) had nine kills and five digs. Sophomore libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) ended the night with six digs to lead the defense.

The ‘Lopes will play at home on Tuesday, Feb. 22 against Lindenwood University in Antelope Gymnasium at 6:00 pm.
