The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team dropped the match 0-3 to Springfield College in Springfield, Mass. at the Volleyball Hall of Fame tournament tonight.
The ‘Lopes dropped a close one, coming within points of a win every set. The Pride barely pulled out a win in the first set 27-25. There were five lead changes and 11 tie scores. GCU hit .360 for the set with 13 kills and 4 errors on 25 attempts. Freshman Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) came out with 5 kills and no errors.
The second set was controlled by Springfield, beating the ‘Lopes 25-20. The third set, however, was more of a competition with the Pride beating GCU 25-23. The ‘Lopes came out ready to play leading most the set before the teams went back and forth the rest of the way. There were five lead changes and seven tie scores before the set and the match was ended by a kill from Springfield College.
Jordon Tarantino (Valley Center, CA , Valley Center , Palomar Community College) had a good night with 8 kills and 2 errors on 12 attempts to hit .500 for the night. He also contributed 3 block assists. Captain Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) led the defense with 10 digs and had a .926 serve receive percentage. Jake Wekell (Tempe, AZ, Marcos de Niza) played the entire set and had an impact with 5 kills and 2 service aces.
Grand Canyon begins conference play next week in Chicago against Loyola University.
