The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team fell to California Baptist University 0-3 in the opening match of the Hall of Fame Classic tournament in Springfield, Mass.
This is the second time the ‘Lopes have faced the Lancers, dropping 0-2 to them this season. The first two sets were dominated by Cal Baptist, beating GCU 25-16 in both. The Lancers hit .611 in the first and .654 in the second, racking up 20 kills alone in the second set. The ‘Lopes battled but were unable to execute. The third set went back and forth between the two teams with five lead changes and 14 tie scores before the Lancers pulled ahead to win 25-22. GCU held their opponent to a .333 hitting percentage by picking up the defense and the block. Despite 13 kills, 2.5 blocks, 1 service ace, and 6 digs, the ‘Lopes were unable to come out with a win.
Freshman Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) had 10 of the teams’ 30 kills for the night and 1 service ace. Taylor Galliano (Norco, CA , Foothill , Irvine Valley College) and Keith Smith (Whittier, CA, California High School) each had 2 block assists. Sophomore libero Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) had an outstanding night despite minimal stats. He ended the night with 5 digs and 2 assists but it was his serve receive and block coverage that kept GCU in the game. Bruns had a .906 receiving percentage with 29 attempts and just 3 errors.
Grand Canyon drops to a 5-9 record and will play in the consolation match at 6 pm (EST) Saturday, the opponent is yet to be determined.
