The Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team defeated Lees-McRae in a 3-0 victory tonight in Antelope Gymnasium.
After a 3-2 win earlier today, GCU was feeling good coming into tonight’s match and it showed. Head coach Jeremy Price switched the lineup, starting sophomore setter Brad Moore (Orange, CA, Orange Lutheran) and junior opposite Ed Ricker (Waukegan, IL , Waukegan, Quincy University); a change that seems to have paid off. “I think we really showed our depth tonight on the outside and the right side,” said Price.
Both teams came out strong in the first set but GCU held the lead, winning 25-21. Junior middle Taylor Galliano (Norco, CA , Foothill , Irvine Valley College) and opposite Ricker came out with 6 kills each. Freshman Ben Ponnet (Merchtem, Belgium, OLVC) led the defense with 4 digs. As a team the ‘Lopes hit .389, having 17 kills and just 3 errors.
Grand Canyon dominated the second set, beating the Bobcats 25-16. Junior Taylor Griffin (Tucson, AZ , Ironwood Ridge) made a definite impact recording 4 kills and 6 digs, while Ponnet carded 4 kills. Again, the ‘Lopes had an impressive 12 kills and just 3 errors to hit .375 for the set.
The Antelopes wrapped up the match with a 25-22 victory in the third set. Ponnet finished the match with 8 kills and no errors, hitting .533 for the night. Junior Galliano dominated the middle for the second time today, finishing the match with 12 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Griffin and Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, CA , Mission Viejo) held the defense with 13 digs, 7 and 6 respectively.
“We’ve had a rough stretch. We worked hard in practice this week and we came out excited,” said Moore.
Grand Canyon will take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats and the Carthage Red Men on Sunday, Jan. 30 starting at 12:30 pm in Antelope Gymnasium.
