IPFW Blaze Past Stritch, 3-0

Fort Wayne, IN - Following the lead of senior captain Darryl Shank, the IPFW Mastodons powered past the Cardinal Stritch Wolves in straight sets, 25-11, 25-22, 25-11.

Senior Darryl Shank got the match off to sharp start, as his service ace gave IPFW an early 7-3 lead. With the score at 11-6, libero JW Kieckhefer made a diving dig which Shank followed with a dig down the line to continue the growing lead.

With the score at 18-10, Shank took the serve and sparked a 7-1 IPFW run, including back-to-back aces, to close out the set with a convincing 25-11 victory.

On the set, Shank posted kills on four of five attacks as his squad took advantage of 11 attack errors by the Wolves.

The momentum didn't quite carry over into set number two, as the 'Dons fell behind early. With the score 20-17 in favor of the Wolves, the IPFW attack began. Leading the charge was Shank, as he followed a Dan Mader ace with three straight kills to take IPFW's first lead since 3-2. From there the offense was clicking. Two Stritch errors continued the late charge and again it was Shank answering the bell for IPFW as his kill closed out a come-from-behind second set win, 25-22.

In the second frame, Shank tallied kills on eight of 11 attacks to lead the IPFW offense.

Tight competition followed until the midway point of the third set, as IPFW held a slim 11-10 lead. Like they did in set number two, the IPFW offense came alive, rattling off five straight points after a huge cross-court kill by Anthony Randolph.

An IPFW service error gave the Wolves their 11th point of the set on the following play before IPFW would take the final ten straight points of the set, sealing a three-set victory with a 25-11 set win.

Overall, Shank led the offense with 12 kills on 16 attacks (.750) in just two sets of action. Dan Mader totaled 25 assists as the frontline led by Rob Samp, Phil Peterson and Corey Frain posted 7.5 blocks. Jonathan Meyer, seeing his first action of 2011 at the libero position, led the 'Dons with eight digs.

As a team, IPFW posted a .380 attack percentage, while holding the Wolves to just 20 kills while forcing 20 errors for a .000 overall hitting total.

The win lifts IPFW to 4-2 overall, as the 'Dons hit the road for another East Coast swing. The 'Dons visit the Sacred Heart Pioneers Friday (Jan. 28) and the George Mason Patriots Saturday (Jan. 29) for a pair of matches with EIVA foes. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
