No. 14 Loyola Storms To Victory Over MSOE, 3-0
CHICAGO - Freshman Torey
Darin totaled eight kills and senior Mike
Hutz added 23 assists, as the No.14 Loyola University Chicago
men's volleyball team swept MSOE on Wednesday evening, 3-0 (25-13,
25-22, 25-19) at Alumni Gym.
Loyola moves to 2-0 this season with the win. MSOE drops its second straight match, falling to 0-2. The Ramblers remain perfect all-time against the Raiders, improving to 9-0 since the teams first met back in 2002.
After experimenting with different lineups last week against
Carthage, Loyola head coach Shane
Davis continued the same strategy on Wednesday against MSOE.
The approach worked early once again for the Ramblers.
In the first set, Joseph Smalzer put away a kill to start a 5-0 Rambler run to open the match. MSOE received a kill from Max Martin, giving the Raiders its first point at 5-1. After trading points, Loyola found a pair of kills from Steve Thompson to take a 13-4 lead. Midway through the first set, Hutz served an ace to continue the momentum, leading the way to a 25-13 opening set win.
In the second frame, MSOE regrouped and brought the set to a 4-4 tie early on. Loyola took control once again after two Raider errors and a kill from Eric Daliege to move ahead 8-5. As the set moved into its later stages, MSOE pulled within two at 21-19, only to give up kills to Darin and Daliege, allowing Loyola to earn the set victory 25-22.
In the third and final set, Brendan Styler picked up two kills and a service ace to get the ball rolling for Loyola. With the set tabbed at 13-11, the Ramblers went on a 5-1 run, thanks to assisted blocks from Teddy Adamczyk, Kyle Exline and Tim Frydendall. As the match entered its final course, Domenic DeWaele finished with a pair of kills, ending the set and the match at 25-19.
Darin led the Ramblers with eight kills, while Daliege finished with seven kills. Dewaele managed six kills in the win. Hutz played the first two sets and added 23 assists, while Exline finished the game 10 assists.
Davis and the Ramblers will be back in action in two days on Friday, Jan. 21, when they host Cardinal Stritch. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. CST.
