No. 8 Ohio State Falls Short in 3-2 Loss at No. 3 Pepperdine

Columbus, Ohio The eighth-ranked (tie) Ohio State (0-2) men’s volleyball squad lost a 3-2 (25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 26-28, 16-14) decision to third-ranked Pepperdine (2-0) Monday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif. OSU’s Shawn Sangrey (.114) recorded a team-high 18 points with 13 kills, two ace serves and six assist blocks. John Klanac added 17.5 points with a team-high 16 kills (.306) and three assist blocks. Pepperdine’s Maurice Torres posted a match-high 27 points for the Waves with a match-high 25 kills (.349) and four assist blocks. Chase Ross added 16.5 points with 11 kills (.188), three ace serves and five assist blocks.

Tied at two in set one, a Buckeye error, a Torres-Matt Pollock block and a Cory Riecks kill gave Pepperdine a 5-2 lead. The Waves held the lead reaching set point at 24-15 off an OSU error. A Jason Tobkin kill stopped the set point at 24-16. Pepperdine won the set, 25-16 with a Tyler Jaynes kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Waves hit .348 in the set to .069 for Ohio State.

With set two tied at seven, a five-point Buckeye run opened a 12-7 Ohio State lead. The run began with kills from Grayson Overman and Sangrey and a Steven Kehoe-Kevin Heine block as Pepperdine called time out. Kills from Mik Berzins and Kehoe completed the run. The Buckeyes held a 22-16 lead when a Buckeye error and Pepperdine kills from Pollock and Riecks cut the lead to three at 22-19 forcing an Ohio State time out. An OSU triple block from Klanac, Heine and Sangrey made it 23-19. The Buckeyes reached set point off a Wave error at 24-19. Ohio State won the set, 25-19, with an Overman-Sangrey block to tie the match at one set each. The Buckeyes hit .344 for the set to .200 for Pepperdine.

A Buckeye error and a kill from Torres in set three broke a 4-4 tie to give the Waves a 6-4 lead. The Buckeyes cut the lead to one several times, the last at 10-9, before a Torres kill and an OSU error made it 12-9 Waves. A Pepperdine error made it 12-10 but two kills from Torres and a Ross-Pollock-Kasey Crider block opened a 15-10 Pepperdine lead. The Waves reached set point with a Crider kill at 24-18. Two errors by Pepperdine stopped two set points to cut the lead to 24-20. Pepperdine won the set, 25-20, with a Pollock kill to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Waves hit .444 for the set to .185 for Ohio State.

Set four was tied at two when a five-point run by Ohio State made it 7-2 Buckeyes. The run began with four consecutive blocks for points beginning with a block by Heine and Sangrey. Two Overman-Sangrey blocks followed and then an Overman-Klanac block. A Wave error ended the run. Ohio State held a 24-16 lead before Pepperdine score eight consecutive points on set point to tie the set at 24. The run began with two OSU errors, a Ross kill and a Pollock-Riecks block before an OSU time out. The run continued with a Pollock-Torres block, kills from Riecks and Torres. An OSU error tied the set at 24. The Buckeyes took a 25-24 lead with a Heine kill. Pollock responded to tie the set at 25 with a kill. A Klanac kill made it 26-25 OSU. Pepperdine tied the set at 26 with a kill from Riecks. The Buckeyes had a 10th set point at 27-26 with a Klanac kill. Ohio State won the set, 28-26, with an ace serve from Sangrey to tie the match at two sets each. The Buckeyes hit .162 for the set to .054 for Pepperdine.

The fifth set had seven early ties, the last at eight all. Two kills from Torres and one from Ross gave Pepperdine an 11-8 lead. OSU cut the lead to one at 11-10 with a kill from Klanac and a Wave error. Kills from Torres and Ross made it 13-10 Waves. A Klanac kill made it 13-11. Pepperdine earned match point with a kill from Ross at 14-11. Back-to-back kills from Klanac stopped to match points at 14-13. The Buckeyes stopped a third match point with a Berzins-Overman block to tie the set at 14. Pepperdine, with two Ross kills, won the set, 16-14, to win the match, 3-2. The Waves hit .571 in the set to .444 for Ohio State.

For the match Pepperdine hit .290 to .224 for Ohio State. The Waves had a 64-61 advantage in kills and a 60-57 margin in assists. OSU’s Kehoe posted a match-high 49 assists while Crider had 45 for the Waves. Each squad recorded three ace serves with Pepperdine’s Ross collecting a match-high three and OSU’s Sangrey recording two. Defensively, the Waves edged OSU 42-41 in digs. Mike McMahon had a match-high 10 digs for Pepperdine while OSU’s Kehoe recorded a team-high nine. At the net, Pepperdine had a 17.5 to 13 advantage in team blocks. Pollock had a match-high 10 total blocks (2-8) for the Waves with OSU’s Overman recording a team-high nine assists.

Ohio State returns to St. John Arena at 7 p.m. Saturday to host St. Francis.
