Columbus, Ohio – The 10th-ranked and No. 4 seed Ohio State (22-8 overall) men’s volleyball squad lost 3-0 (30-25, 30-26, 30-17) to top-ranked and No. 1 seed Stanford (23-6) in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship in Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford. Ohio State’s Shawn Sangrey posted a team-high 12.5 points in the match with 12 kills and one assist block. Stanford’s Evan Romero recorded a match-high 19 points with a match-high 15 kills, two ace serves and four assist blocks.
With game one tied at one, kills from Garrett Werner and Spencer McLachlin gave Stanford a 3-1 lead. A Buckeye kill from Kevin Heine and a Jason Tobkin ace serve tied the game at three. The squads exchanged points to reach 23-all. A Brad Lawson kill and an OSU error gave Stanford a 25-23 lead. Two Lawson ace serves opened the Cardinal lead to 27-23. A Tobkin kill made it 27-24. Cardinal kills from Lawson and Ellis gave Stanford game point at 29-24. The Buckeyes stopped the game point at 29-25 with a kill from Heine. The Cardinal closed out the game, 30-25, with a Romero kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Stanford hit .500 for the game to .389 for the Buckeyes.
Game two opened with a Sangrey kill, two Romero kills and a Cardinal error for a 2-2 tie. Stanford scored the next four points with two kills from McLachlin and two Romero-Gus Ellis blocks to take a 6-2. The Cardinal would not trail the rest of the game. Trailing, 22-18, a Cardinal error and a Heine-John Klanac block cut the lead to two at 22-20. At 24-22, Stanford took the lead to five at 27-22 with kills from Lawson and Romero and an ace serve from Romero. At 28-23, a kill from Klanac and a Stanford error cut the lead to three at 28-25. Romero, with a kill, set game point at 29-25. A kill from Heine stopped the game point at 29-26. An OSU error ended the game, 30-26, to give Stanford a 2-0 lead in the match. The Cardinal hit .273 for the game to .211 for Ohio State.
Game three saw a kill from Kawika Shoji and a McLachlin block give the Cardinal a 2-0 lead. A Heine kill made it 2-1. Lawson, with a kill made it 3-1. A Sangrey kill made it 3-2. An OSU error and an Ellis-Romero block gave Stanford a 5-2 lead. The Cardinal never trailed in the game, expanding the lead to 28-17 where an Ellis kill set match point at 29-17. Stanford won the game, 30-17 with a Lawson block to win the match, 3-0. The Cardinal hit .393 for the game to .031 for Ohio State.
For the match, Stanford hit .375 to .217 for Ohio State. The Cardinal had a 51-43 advantage in kills and a 49-41 margin in assists. Kawika Shoji posted a match-high 44 assists with OSU’s Kehoe recording 38. Stanford had a 6-3 advantage in ace serves with Lawson recording a match-high three. The Buckeyes gave up 11 service errors to 10 for Stanford. Defensively, Ohio State had a 36-33 edge in digs. Stanford’s Erik Shoji posted a match-high 12 digs with OSU’s Mik Berzins recording 11. At the net, the Cardinal had a 12 to seven margin in team blocks. Ellis posted a match-high eight assist blocks for Stanford.
