Grand Canyon drop 3-0 match to No. 12 Loyola
Grand Canyon dropped a three-set match to Loyola-Chicago 30-22,
30-21, 30-28 at Antelope Gymnasium Friday.
It was the second straight night GCU lost to the nation's No. 12
team and leader of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball
Association.
Grand Canyon (14-23, 1-9) rallied from a late six-point, third-set
deficit to tie the game, but was unable to force a fourth game,
like it did Thursday.
Down 22-16, the Antelopes took advantage of a pair of Rambler
attack errors, then freshman Chris Lockwood (Lakewood,
Calif./Lakewood) served up two aces to cut it to
22-20.
Trailing 26-23, another Loyola attack error was followed by a
Lockwood, Brock Hutchins (Gilbert,
Ariz./Highland/Hawai'i) block and after frosh
Tyler Capko (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) had a
successful attack, GCU had tied the game 26-26. Loyola went up
28-26, but GCU tied it again on two more Loyola errors.
Lockwood had nine kills, a .615 average, two service aces and four
digs. Hutchins and frosh Connor Dougherty (Aurora,
Ill./Waubonsie Valley) each had six kills. Dougherty added
one solo block and four more assists. Frosh setter Brad
Moore (Orange, Calif./Lutheran) had 24 assists, six digs
and four block assists. Frosh libero Trent Bruns (Mission
Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) had six digs and four set
assists. Capko added six digs.
GCU finishes its regular season April 16-17 at Lewis.
