No. 11 Ohio State Defeats St. Francis, 3-1
Columbus, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (20-7 overall, 11-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball squad recorded its 20th victory of the season with a 3-1 (30-21, 28-30, 30-23, 30-24) non-conference victory over St. Francis (12-14) in St. John Arena Saturday night. Ohio State’s Shawn Sangrey recorded a match-high 27.5 points in the contest with a match-high 24 kills (.395), three ace serves and one assist block. Ted Schoenfeldt added 17 points for OSU with 14 kills (.545), two ace serves and two assist blocks. Jordan Varee posted a team-high 17.5 points for the Red Flash. Nick Rivett added 12 points with 11 kills (.185) and two assist blocks.
Ohio State, in game one, broke a 2-2 tie with kills from Schoenfeldt and Steven Kehoe for a 4-2 lead. At 7-5, a Kevin Heine kill and a St. Francis error made it 9-5. At 12-9, kills from Rivett and Tyler Mattera cut the lead to one at 12-11. A Nick Gibson kill and a Schoenfeldt ace serve made it 14-11 OSU. A Buckeye error and a Ryan Williams-Pete Freyer block made it 14-13. A Red Flash error, two Kehoe ace serves and a Gibson kill gave Ohio State an 18-13 lead. Leading, 19-15, two Sangrey kills, a Brian Kues ace serve and two St. Francis errors opened a 24-15 Buckeye lead. At 28-20, a Red Flash error set game point at 29-20. A Freyer kill stopped the game point at 29-21. Ohio State won the game, 30-21 with a Heine kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .640 for the game to .345 for St. Francis.
Ohio State held a 2-1 lead in game two before kills from Varee and Patrick McManamon and a McManamon block opened a 4-2 St. Francis lead. A Sangrey kill, a Kehoe-Schoenfeldt block and a Sangrey ace serve gave Ohio State a 5-4 lead. At 7-6, an OSU error, a Varee kill and a Red Flash error made it 8-7 St. Francis. A Red Flash error, a Rivett kill and an OSU error made it 10-8 St. Francis. A Heine kill made it 10-9. An Adam Roche kill, his ace serve and a Varee block gave St. Francis a 13-9 lead. Trailing, 21-18, Ohio State used kills from Sangrey, Klanac and Schoenfeldt and two Sangrey ace serve to take a 23-21 lead. At 26-24, kills from Roche, Varee and Rivett gave the Red Flash a 27-26 lead. OSU tied the game at 27 with a Sangrey kill. An OSU error and a Heine kill made it 28-all. Two Buckeye errors ended the game at 30-28 for St. Francis to tie the match at one game each. The Red Flash hit .591 for the game to .353 for Ohio State.
Ohio State trailed 7-6 in game three before a Red Flash error and kills from John Klanac and Schoenfeldt gave OSU a 9-7 lead. St. Francis responded with an Alex Fortney-Roche block, an OSU error and a Varee kill to take a 10-9 lead. A Sangrey kill tied the game at 10. At 12-all, kills from Schoenfeldt, Sangrey and Klanac, a Heine solo block and a Schoenfeldt ace serve opened a 17-12 Ohio State lead. At 18-13, an OSU error, a Ryan Williams kill and a Mattera ace serve cut the lead to 18-16. Sangrey, with two kills made it 20-16. At 22-19, a 4-1 OSU run made it 26-20 with kills from Klanac and Sangrey, two Red Flash errors and one OSU error. At 28-23, a Heine kill gave OSU game point at 29-23. Ohio State won the game, 30-23, with a kill from Schoenfeldt to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .417 for the game to .034 for St. Francis.
The Red Flash opened game four with a Roche block and an OSU error for a 2-0 lead. Trailing, 4-2, a St. Francis error and a Klanac kill tied the game at four. Tied at five, a Sangrey kill and a Red Flash error made it 7-5 OSU. An OSU error made it 7-6. Kills from Klanac and Schoenfeldt and a St. Francis error gave Ohio State a 10-6 lead. OSU held a 19-16 lead when a kill from Sangrey, two Kehoe ace serves and a Red Flash error made it 23-16 Ohio State. St. Francis responded with a Roche kill, an OSU error and a McManamon-Varee block to make it 23-19. At 26-22, a St. Francis error and a Schoenfeldt-Mike Stefani block gave OSU a 28-22 lead. A Buckeye error and a kill from Varee made it 28-24. The Buckeyes reached match point at 29-24 with a Gibson kill. A St. Francis error ended the game at 30-24 for the Buckeyes, giving Ohio State a 3-1 match victory. Ohio State hit .222 for the game to .222 for St. Francis.
Ohio State hit .402 for the match to .280 for St. Francis. The Buckeyes had a 70-47 advantage in kills and a 65-44 margin in assists. Kehoe posted a match-high 59 assists for Ohio State while Williams had 38 for the Red Flash. The Buckeyes had a 10-2 edge in ace serves with Kehoe posting a match-high four for Ohio State. The Buckeyes gave up 27 service errors to 20 for the Red Flash. Defensively, OSU had a 35-32 edge in digs over St. Francis. John Wappler posted a match-high 15 digs for St. Francis while Mik Berzins and Sangrey shared team-high honors with nine each for the Buckeyes. At the net, the Red Flash had a 12-5 margin in team blocks. Roche posted a match-high six blocks (1-5) for St. Francis.
Ohio State will next play in the MIVA Tournament but received a bye in the quarterfinals and will host a semifinal match at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 28.
