The combination of Shank and Fyfield combined for 43 of IPFW's 62 kills. Fyfield posted 24 kills on just 41 total attacks for an impressive .463 hitting percentage. After posting a team-best 17 kills last night, Shank responded with 19 today in the afternoon victory.
The opening stanza was all 'Dons from the start. After a quick 5-2 lead, the 'Dons offense fell into a groove. They powered ahead to a 17-10 lead and cruised to a strong 10-point opening set victory. Fyfield posted four kills to lead the offense, which took advantage of seven Hawk attack errors and six service flaws in the opening set.
Fyfield and the 'Dons took their time to return their second set swagger. The Hawks were on the attack early, taking brief two and three-point leads through the opening of the back-and-forth start. The set began to look out of reach, as Quincy's Ben Schulze fired a kill that gave the home squad a convincing 25-20 lead.
A Quincy service error on the next point and back-to-back Hawk errors cut the lead to 25-23. An IPFW service error pushed the lead to 26-23 before a pair of Fyfield kills sandwiched three more IPFW points, as the five-point run gave the 'Dons an amazing comeback 28-26 lead. The 'Dons moved on to set point at 29-27 with a Shank kill and the junior returned with another smash to close the comeback second set victory, 30-27.
In the set, the IPFW offense reflected the patterns of the season as Fyfield and Shank combined for an impressive 14 kills.
The Hawks set the 'Dons up for another miraculous comeback in set three, but the spark simply wasn't there. The Hawks took the lead at 3-2 and never looked back. Their advantage grew to as many as seven at 29-22 before Quincy slammed the door on their lone set victory at 30-24.
The IPFW offense sputtered in the set, as they hit just .114 and made nine attack errors.
With the momentum seemingly swung in favor of the home team, the 'Dons turned where they had all year. Shank posted eight kills in the final set and Fyfield posted seven as the 'Dons ran away with the fourth set. They took a 16-15 lead and pushed the lead to as many as five before slamming the door on the regular season with a 30-26 set victory.
The win closes the regular season at 12-16 for the 'Dons and 4-8 in MIVA play. The victory guarantees a fifth place finish in MIVA play. Official seedings and tournament placements will be announced Monday at the completion of the MIVA regular season.
