Grand Canyon falls to No. 12 Loyola
ANTELOPES FALL TO NO. 12 LOYOLA
Grand Canyon was able to get a game, but not the match against
the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Conference leader
Loyola-Chicago, ranked No. 12 in the nation, at Antelope Gymnasium
Thursday.
GCU (14-22. 1-8) lost by set scores of 30-23, 30-23, 23-30,
30-24.
Freshman middle hitter Chris Lockwood (Lakewood,
Calif./Lakewood) had 14 kills, a .550 attack percentage,
one solo block and two block assists. Sophomore outside hitter
Brock Hutchins (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland/Hawai'i)
had 13 kills, two service aces, one solo block and three block
assists.
Freshman setter Brad Moore (Orange,
Calif./Lutheran) had 51 assists and five digs. Sophomore
outside hitter Taylor Griffin (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood
Ridge) had a match-high 15 digs. Freshman libero
Trent Bruns (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo)
had nine digs. Freshman middle hitter Connor Dougherty
(Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) had eight kills, a .375
attack percentage and two service aces.
After dropping the first two sets, GCU hit .467 in the third set.
With the game tied 19-19, GCU scored 11 of the final 15 points.
A Hutchins kill broke the tie and a Hutchins, Dougherty,
Tyler Capko (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) block
gave the Antelopes a two-point lead. Lockwood followed with a
service ace and after a Rambler point. GCU scored the next five.
Hutchins had a kill and a pair of service aces and Capko and
Griffin each had kills for a 27-20 advantage.
Griffin, Hutchins and Lockwood each had kills to round out the
scoring.
In the fourth, GCU rallied from a 20-16 deficit to cut it to one
on kills from Capko and Lockwood and a Loyola attack error. The
Ramblers were able to score eight of the final 11 points.
