At 13-12, a Grayson Overman solo block made it 14-12, OSU. At 15-13, a Buckeye error and a Will Price-Nick Turko block tied the game at 15. At 20-all, a John Klanac kill made it 21-20 as Penn State called time out. A Penn State error and a kill from Sunder made it 22-21, OSU. A Nittany Lion error and a Mike Stefani ace serve made the lead three at 24-21. A Sunder kill and an OSU error forced a Buckeye time out at 24-23. Buckeye kills from Sangrey and Tobkin made it 26-23, OSU as Penn State called time out. Back-to-back kills from Tobkin gave Ohio State a five-point lead at 28-23. Errors by both teams made it 29-24 with Ohio State serving game point. An OSU error made it 29-25. Ohio State won the game, 30-25, off a Nittany Lion service error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .273 for the game to .120 for Penn State.
Tied at four in game two, kills from Lipsitz and Turko gave Penn State a 6-4 lead. At 8-6, kills from Will Price and Wolf gave the Nittany Lions a 10-6 lead as OSU called time out. Trailing, 14-10, a Klanac-Overman-Sangrey block and an ace serve from Sangrey cut the lead to 14-12. A Sunder kill made it 15-12. Klanac, with two kills, cut the lead to one at 15-14. Penn State, with a six-point run, opened a 21-14 lead. The run began with a Sunder-Turko-Edgardo Goas block, a Sunder kill and a Price-Turko block. After an OSU time out, a Buckeye error, a Goas ace serve and a Turko kill completed the run. Penn State, at 27-20, used kills from Turko and Sunder to reach game point at 29-20. A Buckeye error ended the game at 30-20 to tie the match at one game each. The Nittany Lions hit .375 for the game to .133 for Ohio State.
Ohio State trailed, 10-9, in the third game and scored five consecutive points to open a 14-10 lead. A Sangrey kill tied the game at 10. Two Schoenfeldt kills and a Tobkin ace serve forced a Penn State time out at 13-10. Another Schoenfeldt kill made it 14-10. OSU took the lead to five at 20-15 with a Sangrey kill. A Lipsitz kill and an OSU error made it 20-17. Trailing, 24-21, two OSU errors cut the margin to one at 24-23. Kills from Kehoe and Price made it 25-24. OSU made it 27-24 with kills from Tobkin and Sangrey as Penn State called time out. A Lipsitz kill and his solo block cut the lead to one at 27-26. Kills from Tobkin and Lipsitz made it 28-27. The Buckeyes reached game point at 29-27 with a kill from Klanac. A Penn State error ended the game at 30-27 for the Buckeyes giving Ohio State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Nittany Lions hit .393 for the game to .359 for the Buckeyes.
Penn State held a 6-4 lead in the fourth game before a Nittany Lion error and an ace serve from Klanac tied the game at six. At seven-all, a Penn State error, an Overman ace serve and a Tobkin kill gave OSU a 10-7 lead as Penn State called time out. A Turko kill stopped the run but a Tobkin kill and a Sangrey-Schoenfeldt block made it 12-8, OSU. At 16-12, kills from Klanac and Overman opened a six-point Buckeye lead at 18-12, forcing a Penn State time out. At 21-15, a Price kill cut the margin to five at 21-16. A Sangrey kill and two Tobkin ace serves took the lead to eight at 24-16. Leading, 25-17, a Klanac kill and an OSU error made it 26-18. Kills from Sangrey and Sunder made it 27-19. An OSU error cut the lead to seven at 27-20. Ohio State, with kills from Klanac and Kehoe, reached match point at 29-20. A Sunder kill and a Buckeye error stopped two match points to make the score 29-22. Penn State stopped a third match point at 29-23 with a kill from Wolf. After an Ohio State time out, Tobkin ended the game with a kill at 30-23 for a 3-1 match victory for the Buckeyes. Ohio State hit .429 in the game to .321 for Penn State.
Penn State outhit Ohio State, .314 to .283, in the match while the Buckeyes had a 66-56 advantage in kills. OSU had a 60-52 edge in assists with Kehoe recording 54 for the Buckeyes and Goas, 51 for the Nittany Lions. Ohio State had a nine-to-two margin in ace serves with OSU’s Tobkin recording a match/career-high four. The Buckeyes gave up 22 service errors to 16 for Penn State. OSU edged Penn State, 41-40, in digs with Buckeye Mik Berzins recording a match-high 14 digs. Penn State had a 10-9 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Schoenfeldt (two solos and three assist blocks) and PSU’s Turko (five assist blocks) shared match-high honors with five blocks each.
Ohio State continues the east coast road trip with a 7 p.m. match Monday at George Mason (5-11).
