(Quincy, Ill.) The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened up the first day of play in their tournament with a pair of 3-1 wins as they took down Limestone College and Park University.
The match of the night was saved for last as Quincy battled Park in an intense match despite its 3-1 score. Quincy won the match 30-22, 32-34, 35-33 and 30-25. Quincy came out firing in the match, with 13 kills in the first game, and knocking the Pirates back with the 30-22 win. However Park responded with an extra point win in game two and nearly pulled off the win in game three. The third game was the changer as Quincy saw a 29-27 lead with server slip away. The Pirates tied the game up and held a 31-30 lead with serve when the Hawks picked up a kill from Peter Coley to even the score up. Moments later Joseph Sokol ripped a shot for a kill to give Quincy the lead and Peter Coley finished off the game with a cross court kill for the win.
The Hawks took that momentum in to the fourth game jumping out to a 16-10 lead. But Quincy had to hold off a late charging Pirates, who tied the score up at 20-20. Quincy picked up back to back kills again from Coley and Sokol to complete the win. Sokol led all hitters with 19 kills while Coley added 14 kills. Dan Dresen finished with 46 assists and the Hawks front line was dominant as they finished with 17.5 total team blocks.
In the day's first action for Quincy, the Hawks picked up a 30-24, 22-30, 30-27 and 30-20 win over Limestone. Quincy hit just .148 as a team but Limestone fared even worse hitting just .086. Quincy did manage 12 total team blocks and seven service aces in the match. Coley led the Hawks with 12 kills while Chris Zeidler added 10 kills. Dresen finished with 46 assists for the Hawks.
Quincy improves to 8-10 overall and will face Pfeiffer, Missouri Baptist and Fontbonne on Saturday to conclude the tournament.
